Sunscreen and Prevention of Skin Aging
Passage of time creates wear and tear on all our tissues. However, this is most obviously apparent on our skin especially on our face. We have known for many years that sun exposure accelerates skin aging. Affected skin loses elasticity, appears dry, wrinkled, partially pigmented and often has dilated superficial blood vessels. Ultra violet (UV) A and B components of solar radiation are implicated in photo aging of the skin as well as increasing the risk of development of actinic keratosis and skin cancer. Thus it is thought that by decreasing sun exposure and blocking UVA/B with sunscreen, photo aging may be delayed or prevented. Up to recently hard clinical evidence for this had been lacking.
In a study published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine in June 2013, MCB Hughes et. al, have performed a randomized controlled, interventional trial to determine whether regular daily use of sunscreen retards skin aging, measured by photo aging. They were able to show that the group who used sunscreen daily showed no detectable increase in skin aging after 4-5 years of the study. Thus it appears that regular daily use of sunscreen retards skin aging in healthy men & women, resulting in a more youthful appearance and reduced risk of skin cancer.
It is important to choose a full spectrum high SPF sunscreen and to use it daily and to apply it more than just once a day at times of swimming, heavy sweating or showering. At Melrose MedSpa we offer excellent sunscreens from three manufacturers: ProTherapy MD SPF 30; PCA Skin SPF 30; ViDerm SPF 55.
